Audi and Porsche Announce New Recall in Germany Over Incorrect Repair Parts

Audi Recalls 100,000 Vehicles Over Unresolved Defect from Previous Recall, Risking Rear Axle Misalignment

According to foreign media reports, Audi is set to recall 100,000 vehicles due to a defect that was not properly addressed in a previous recall, which now poses a risk of altering the wheel alignment of the vehicle’s rear axle.

In June last year, Audi recalled select 2019–2021 models, including the A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, Q8, and e-tron. In addition to Audi models, approximately 169 Porsche Cayenne vehicles will also be recalled in Germany. Reports indicate that the previous recall affected 150,000 vehicles worldwide, with around 30,000 of them in Germany.

However, an Audi spokesperson stated that non-specification nuts may have been used in the connection between the rear axle and the suspension. These non-conforming parts could lead to various issues, including accelerated tire wear and uncontrolled movement of the axle. “We cannot rule out the possibility that the rear axle could suddenly and uncontrollably shift in the wrong direction at higher speeds,” the spokesperson added.

Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) noted: “Under stress, the affected parts may corrode and crack, potentially causing loosening between the axle control arm and wheel carrier, thereby impacting driving performance.” In some cases, a damaged nut could increase the gap between the suspension link and hub carrier, which may affect the rear wheel alignment.

Audi explained that the issue could result in increased and uneven tire wear on the rear axle, as well as changes in vehicle handling. Excessive or uneven tire wear may reduce friction between the tires and the road surface. Additionally, severely worn tires could lead to sudden loss of tire pressure.
